If/when we get past step 1 above, manually specifying DNS for the interfaces on laptops is easy enough but how do we force mobile devices, like Androids, to use it? Android will allow manual DNS settings for specific wi-fi networks IIRC, but we will need ALL wi-fi networks AND mobile data using our DNS.Can a service such as ClouDNS or No-IP or one of those be set up as a forwarder? I sent them both an inquiry, but their first-tier support was completely puzzled by the idea and I'm waiting for an escalated response.
How can we make the DNS WAN-facing with our dynamic external IP address? We have a DDNS host that we use for RDP access and so forth, but a FQDN obviously can't be entered as a DNS server (kind of circular logic trying to do that!). It probably wouldn't be worth the hassle or perform well with hundreds of users, but with so few devices and users, I think we should be fine. I would like devices to be able to run their DNS queries through the local DNS when they are on mobile data (phones, etc) or on another network (a public wi-fi or a client office). We use OpenDNS and Pi Hole for filtering (see for more detail). Our little network has 5 users and fewer than 20 or so devices on it, plus the occasional guest.
